I love to ride, so I would like to take this opportunity to introduce free guided walks guided by free teachers to the Irvine Ranch Conservancy at letsgooutside.org.

Although there are some awesome road systems in our backyard, I love the opportunity to meet new people and get to know the trails I’ve been living in here for 37 years and the trails I’ve never known before.

On these walks, of course, I’m a culinary nutritionist with a focus on disease prevention, and so the questions begin.

it happens to me love talking about all things food and fitness, so I welcome these conversations.

I begin these meetings by listening carefully to the questions / statements shared with me. Then I think about what my next move will be, rocking between comments like: Where did you hear that? What are your goals? Or why would you consider that?

At the top of the list of comments I hear is “What do you think of the keto diet?” “I’m fasting regularly” and “I was told to avoid dairy and gluten.”

I was often immersed in the purpose of education and the insanity of the ultimate diet.

In the case of the “ketogenic diet,” it was a nutritional therapy designed by doctors who worked with children with uncontrolled epilepsy in the 1920s. As you can imagine, this was a huge medical breakthrough, as each seizure could damage the brain, so it was necessary to take extreme measures.

These children were closely followed and inevitably lacked the nutrients, minerals, minerals, and essential fiber they needed in this low-fat, moderate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. This was not intended for the general population.

A big part of what I do in life is try to get people to consider the final view of their diet as reasonable. And for me, when we talk about consuming large amounts of fat, including saturated fats “harmful to the heart,” in addition to eliminating major food groups, the so-called “keto” diet, I have to ask, “Why?”

Unfortunately, the diet strategy is often driven by a desire to lose weight, not a desire to improve health.

And while most new clients come to me with the primary goal of losing weight, in a few weeks of training and learning, I would say that most, if not all, are eager to prevent, stop, and return to the disease process. a long, healthy, independent and cheerful life. And, surprisingly, the omnipotent scale remains the same.

Most of my clients have excellent diets, which means they have tried many, and some admit that they have been on a “diet” for most of their adult lives. When I ask about their success, they always say, “The diet worked until I left.” (Mother G.’s deep sigh)

Influenced by social media and internet access, billions of {dollars} in the food and healthcare industry are plentiful, so we need to be very careful about who we let affect us.

Although bullying and brainwashing have existed since the beginning of mankind, the concept of “gaslighting” —questioning the validity of people’s thoughts — is still alive and well today.

My hope is to empower my readers with health and wellness information that is “reasonable”; consider health goals; understand that only a 5-10% weight reduction can significantly improve your health, but it doesn’t have to come with a punitive and restrictive diet; moving to healthier eating; gather in the kitchen and prepare and eat meals together; and go outside and enjoy this beautiful place where we live.
